40 mph limit not likely
A traffic engineering firm hired by the township says it is unlikely that Middlesex County will lower speed limits on Old Trenton Road.
The report, prepared by Shropshire Associates of Lumberton, has found that 85 percent of motorists on Old Trenton Road are traveling near the 50-mph speed limit. Because of that, said Shropshire Project Manager Andrew Feranda, it is unlikely the county will lower the speed limit to 40 mph.
The township asked the county in January to lower the speed limit on Old Trenton Road and hired Shropshire Associates in March to conduct a traffic study needed as part of its application.
Because Old Trenton Road is a county road, any change must be approved by the county and then by the state Department of Transportation.
Mr. Feranda presented a summary of Shropshire's report Monday night. In it, he explained the company's findings and offered several ways in which the township could improve safety on the road, including "bump outs" and left-turn lanes.
