This proposal shows the employees working longer hours. Are the employees salaried or hourly?

No details were given. The idea was posed as a concept to look into, or not.

Does this effect our public works dept? If it does then I think it would be a bad idea because that would me less work would get done . Realistically do you think the guys are going to get more work done when it's hot out and you worked 8hrs already you know your going to slow down the last couple of hrs.

CRANBURY — Cranbury officials are considering closing Town Hall on Fridays, but extending regular business hours the rest of the week to cut energy costs.

”As we’ve been talking about budgets, we’re looking at ways to save,” said Mayor David Stout after making the announcement during the Township Committee meeting Monday. “Friday seemed the day that was most logical. I’m not aware of any boards or commissions that meet here on Fridays.”

Township officials hope, if the Friday closure comes into effect, it will help Cranbury save in energy costs as well as benefit those employees who commute to work each day.

Although the changes are only under discussion, the township is suggesting extending building’s hours from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. to 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday, said Christine Smeltzer, township business administrator. These changes also would be executed on a trial basis.

”I think it’s a creative idea, and I don’t want to discourage you by saying I would be here more,” joked resident Dave Mauger, a regular at the meetings. “It may be something to look into on a trial basis for the summer.”

”I appreciate this process because myself and my wife are working,” said another resident Josh Kohut. “So evening hours would be appealing to us.”

While several residents saw it as a positive suggestion, others noted drawbacks.

”You have to consider the holidays,” said resident Richard Callen. “A lot of holidays land on Mondays, and you could be closed for four days.”

Committeeman Jay Taylor recommended the township contact PSE&G to get an estimate of the savings from having the building under minimal usage Fridays.

The committee also will attempt to get feedback from municipal employees about issues with child care or other after-hour commitments that could be affected by the closure.

”I think there are merits to looking into it,” Mr. Taylor said. “I think there’s a balance sheet to look at. What are the savings, and what are the impacts?”
