March 17, 2020 - Township Committee COVAD 19 - Update
Good Afternoon Cranbury,
We here at the Township Committee and in Town Hall want to keep everyone updated on what’s going on in town.
Please rest assured that myself, my 4 fellow TC members, our Township Administrator Denise Marabello and our Chief of Police Rickey Varga are all in close and constant contact with each other as this pandemic unfolds. I am pleased to report that we are all working together as a cohesive and effective team.
The COVID 19 pandemic is a rapidly changing event with updates from the state and federal authorities arriving on a seemingly hourly basis. We here at Town Hall are trying like you, I am sure, to keep up with the steady stream of information while also trying not to overdo it! With that being said here is some of the latest and most relevant information we have:
As of 5:00 pm:
There are no confirmed or suspected cases in Cranbury
-NJ confirmed cases 267
-Middlesex County 21 cases
-Mercer County 6 cases
NJ State closures, restrictions and announcements:
On 3/16/20 Governor Murphy yesterday issued Executive order no. 104 this order stipulates that in order to encourage “social distancing “and to mitigate the likely spread of the virus the following rules are in effect statewide:
-All public, private and parochial preschool programs, and elementary and secondary schools will close effective 3/18
-All casinos, concert venues, nightclubs, racetracks, gyms and fitness centers, movie theaters are closed as of 3/16
-All other non-essential retail, recreational and entertainment businesses must cease daily operations from 20:00 -05:00
-All restaurants can remain open only for delivery or take out only
-Effective today all indoor retail shopping malls, and amusement parks are closed
- Any employee whose workplace has closed or whose hours have been cut will be eligible for either full or partial unemployment insurance. For further info please visit: nj.gov/labor
Locally here is what I can tell you is happening:
SOCIAL DISTANCING WILL SAVE LIVES - At this point in the pandemic we are working on the presumption that the one thing we can do is reduce transmission of the virus and to do that we need to reduce contact between individuals regardless of whether or not they feel well or not well. I realize that this is not an easy thing to do especially for the school age and teenagers in town. But please I implore everyone to keep your distance.
-Some but not all of our local restaurants have closed. The ones that remain open are ready, willing and eager for your business. If you are hungry and are sick of cooking please give them a call for pickup or delivery.
Please call your favorite local restaurant and let them feed you.
If as we fear the pandemic continues for week after week our local small businesses are going to suffer. It’s the least we can do to keep them going!
-Our parks remain open however we are restricting access to playground equipment at this time. We do not want small children coming into unintentional contact with other children and or have unneeded exposure to the playground equipment which itself remains a possible vector for viral transmission.
-We have had some questions from residents regarding the need for and opportunities for volunteers. We understand and appreciate the volunteer spirit and desire to help and that is in many ways the lifeblood of our town. There are opportunities being developed by some of the non profit and church groups in town and as we become aware of these plans and they come to fruition we will gladly relay that information to the public.
Thank you again Cranbury for your ongoing attention and support. We really do appreciate your patience and cooperation as we all go through this unprecedented and uncertain public health emergency together. Stay safe, be well and be kind to each other.
Yours in service,
Mayor Matt Scott
