Unfortunately, I think it is those who are pro-stand alone library that are making this distinction. It's a for us or against us mentality. That is why they jump to the value a library brings and how can anyone be against a library. For the most part those like myself who oppose a stand alone library are very pro-library in terms of services and value. In fact I donate when the Friends of the Library have their drives.

COAH could possibly go away if the voters do not re-elect Corzine.
School enrollment is going down, not up, so if COAH does not factor in, we should not need additional space.
As for the shared space, I thought both the library and school were happy with the new arrangement made earlier in the year when the library spaces were rearranged.
I agree with an earlier poster that the feasibility study will show that it is feasible to purchase PNC, since the board is the one paying for the study, but like any government project, I'm sure the costs will not be controlled and the project would overrun.
Do not mistake non-support of a new library building as non-support for the library. They do a terrific job.

If they are planning to spend money based on the fear of the school needing to expand because of COAH then their priorities are wrong. We'll need every last cent to pay for COAH homes and that comes before spending money on a library.

I keep reading that "the school may need the full library space." Someone needs to articulate why the school would need the full space in detail so we can decide for ourselves.
One contributing factor may be that additional COAH obligations are likely to increase the school population by roughly 12% by 2018.

The Cranbury Public Library Board of Trustees met yesterday at 4:30 p.m. to discuss the possibility of acquiring the building for a combined use community facility. The public library could be the anchor for that space with potential for community meeting rooms, senior space, archival facilities, and office space that could possibly be rented. The reality is that the school may soon need the full library space. We are planning for the future and we have the opportunity to look at the bank building now. However, the price may be too high, but we will not know unless we start the process. The library board's goal is to accomplish this without any increase in taxes and actually to save the town money. The minutes from the meeting will be posted on the library website after the board approves them on June 11. Marilynn Mullen instructed the staff to leave the library doors unlocked so that anyone could enter after 5 p.m. The meeting was over by 5:15 or so. Please consider coming to our next board meeting on June 11 at 7:30 p.m.
So that that mean that the Library staff ignored their instructions and barred the public from access after 5 since the previous poster obviously experienced locked doors?
I keep reading that "the school may need the full library space." Not if we tell them they don't. They report to the taxpayers, the same ones involved here. So if the taxpayers want the school to share the library, the school will have to deal with it. So that can't be a reason in-and-of-itself. Someone needs to articulate why the school would need the full space in detail so we can decide for ourselves. We make the decisions, not them.

I went to the library at 5:05 and no one was there. The doors were locked. I guess the meeting ended quickly? Or was it moved?
Can anyone provide details?

With half the surplus, we could buy a Kindle for every household in town. With the other half, you could remodel the existing space. If you remove (recycle) the books, there is plenty of space for special reading oriented programs run by the library staff. We would have the "greenest" library in America and would be a model for high-tech cost efficiency. We could probably qualify for grants, too. Let's take advantage of this opportunity to lead libraries in a new direction.
Completely agree. Talking about building a bigger library these days is backwards thinking. We will need less room, not more. The surplus should be for more PC and means for people to access information electronically. Not a new building

Today's meeting is an open public meeting held in the library.
I sure hope everyone can fit into the library, today. If not, we might have to build a bigger library just to accomodate all the people who want to complain about building/buying a bigger library.

Special Meeting - Library Board of Trustees
The regular Board of Trustees meeting is Thursday, June 11
7:30 p.m.
Both meeting are in the Thomas Gambino Room of the library.
So can the general public attend the special meeting at 4:30 today?
Where is it held -- the library?
Interesting how the special meeting is held while people are working, but the regular meetings are held in the evening.

It will be nice if the library can post events *and* the meetings of the board, especially if a meeting is related to funding of a new library using tax dollars.
