as an adult then you should know the law and if you don't feel safe then walk. When bikes come from behind it is dangerous.

the point is that the bikers are FORCED onto the sidewalks because the cars are going to fast. I'd much rather ride on the street, but won't as I don't want to get hit in front of my house.

This issue is about speed, which drives other issues....How can we fix this?

Neighbor, as I said, if the people go 25 mph then perhaps people won't be on the sidewalk.

Speeding and riding bikes on the sidewalk are both illegal and both can hurt innocent people. I even heard an officer yell at someone on a bike to get off the sidewalk. So someone saying they will ride the sidewalk is just like someone saying I'll go 30 or 35 since I don't get caught. If you feel your only choice is to break the law then be safer and be safe for others who are walking on the sidewalk and walk. I see a lot of parents walking while their little ones ride bikes to school.

Please provide the law that says it is illegal to ride on the sidewalks. I can't find it.

NJ state law does not prohibit riding on sidewalks, but most towns including Cranbury have municipal laws banning this. Chief Logan used to yell at the kids for riding their bikes on the sidewalks. I have seen officers recently yell at adults on the sidewalk to get off.

I don't see officers today yelling at kids to get off the sidewalk. That doesn't mean it doesn't happen or it could mean that they feel the traffic is too dangerous so they don't push the issue. I have no idea where you would look up a municipal law such as that so I am of no help to anyone on that.

I do know Chief Logan used to talk to the kids and I do remember his talk on it being safety as the town has a lot of older residents and young children walking. He always did a safety class with the younger grades.

My kids and their friends ride their bikes on the sidewalks in Shadow Oaks all the time. And, I told them to do that for their safety.

If this is not right, something is wrong in this town.

Just a further comment. I don't see how people can argue one is fine and the other is not. Speeding and riding bikes on the sidewalk both represent safety issues. I am not the poster who started this, but I can tell you I was hit by a kid (about 12-14) on a bike in front of my home. He and two others were racing and he didn't see me kneeling pulling weeds. If I had been a child it could have been bad. I just ended up with a bruise or two. The kid was very apologetic. There is not enough room on our sidewalks. There should also be less tolerance on speeding. Both are issues, both represent concerns for the Main St. area and both can be easily fixed.

It all comes down to judgement. If you are an adult the officers probably will feel you are adult enough to be on the road to watch traffic. If you a child they will likely let you ride on the sidewalk. They may even ignore people all together. In Shadow Oaks no one is really on the sidewalk so I highly doubt adults or kids would be bothered. However, on Main St. where there are always people walking it can be an issue. Unfortunately, you can't say bikes are prohibited on this sidewalk or that because it would be a constant revision in our law.

This would likely fall under municipal authority, per Municipal Land Use Law. So each town would have discretion over whether to prohibit it or not.

There is no way Cranbury can make kids riding bikes on sidewalks of the Main St. unlawful. Just look at all the walkers and kiddie bikers going to Cranbury school when the school starts in Sept.

I agree that adults riding sports bikes on the sidewalks is not safe.

The fact is riding bikes is illegal. However, no officer is going to yell at an Elementary school kid. Most officers have kids of their own and they want the children to know the police are nothing to be scared of. However, applying law is easier than writing it. So if you're kids ride don't worry. If they ride while you walk don't worry. If you're riding you may get a warning to get off the sidewalk or may not.

If riding bike on the sidewalks in Cranbury is illegal, then the town should provide bike lanes for bikers. Otherwise, I bet some bikers who got hit by car can suit the town.

Since Plainsboro gets the revenue for Cranbury's traffic tickets, I wonder if there is an opportunity for Cranbury to enlist the help of the Plainsboro Police to increase traffic patrols without increasing our expenses and without shifting the resources of the Cranbury Police away from crime prevention.

I see the cruisers patrolling neighborhoods a lot and see them running radar. I personally like seeing them in the neighborhood more.
One officer told me last year that he will never tell a child to ride in the street only on the sidewalk because the street is too dangerous for children.
I also like that they give ice cream tickets to the kids for wearing their bike helmets. It's a great idea !

Why stop with Plainsboro assisting with traffic.....Just merge the two departments and be finished with it.
