Revised village cell tower plans go through

The Township Committee on Monday approved revised plans for a cell tower to be built in the village and hopes to solicit bids to four cell phone providers this week.

The tower, which will replace the existing lattice tower behind the Cranbury Firehouse on South Main Street, will carry the township's existing emergency communications and will have at least two companies co-located on the tower.

Members of Township Committee said by allowing multiple companies on the tower, they hope to reduce the possibility of multiple cell towers in the township, but said they could not prevent towers from locating on private properties.

The township began drawing up bid proposals last year to construct the tower as a way to boost cellular service on the western side of town. The Township Committee approved a resolution in September to solicit bids from multiple carriers after Sprint contacted the township with a request to locate one of its communication towers within the township. Sprint conducted a study last year to find out what location would be best in order to provide the most coverage.
