That's not the question. The question is why aren't they tryong to go into the available zoned retail spaces.
The requests for 130 wanted major zoning variances that would have been good for the developer with potential downside for cranbury. |

There aren't enough people in cranbury to support the kind of vibrant downtown many people envision. To support a good market, restuarants and boutique shops, a great stand alone public library and all the other stuff people want here, we need to double the residents in town or be willing to pay a lot more for the priviledges. Otherwise, I suggest you all revise your expectations. |

In all seriousness, has anyone heard about Lowes being proposed for the intersection of Rt 130 and Old Trenton? A friend has a relative that works in Lowes Corporate and he said that Lowes was looking to build a store on in that area. |

That would explain the sudden interest in expanding OTR and revising the master plan. |

No, it is not zoned for it and would not be approved by the Zoning or Planning board. Even if the master plan approves retail it will be restricted retail to prevent big box or fast food. That has been made pretty clear by our planning board members at the meetings. Which is a good thing.
On the other hand, why is this site all of a sudden getting spammed like this thread? |

That would not explain anything. The county independent of the PB and Town is doing Old Trenton Road. The master plan has been discussed ad nauseum at TC and PB and never would the town allow big box to come in. People, read the meeting notes and agendas they are there on the Township website. |

I like the idea that Walmart would propose a store 3 miles down the road from another Walmart. |

Actually with the closing of Gitmo the federal government is looking for a place to house the detainees. The site at the corner of Old Trenton road and south main makes perfect sense with its easy access to major roads as well as the new and improved old trenton road which will allow for greater access for the military convoys they use when transferring prisoners.
The proposed name for this new detention site is Gitbury.
The upside for Cranbury is we could potentially count each detainees bed in Gitbury as an affordable housing unit based on potential credits from COAH. We then would not only meet but exceed our affordable housing obligations.
I hear the Township Committee is very open to the idea of this. |

It is funny you say this. That location was actually a prison for Germans during World War 2. |

I sure know where to come if we're ever looking for a good comedian to open at the Cranbury coffee house... |

Why not big box? They look just like warehouses and, for the most part they are set back from the road, close at 9 PM and allow for berms and other natural screening. A Lowes would be less invasive than a 24 hour Wawa and generate a lot more tax revenue, too. Plus, Lowes won't compete with any of the Main St businesses. |
