They’ve been called McMansions, Starter Castles, Garage Mahals and Faux Chateaus but here’s the latest thing you can call them — History.
In the past few years, there have been an increasing number of references made to the “McMansion glut” and the “McMansion backlash,” as more towns pass ordinances against garishly large homes, which are generally over 3,000 square feet and built very close together.
What sets a McMansion apart from a regular mansion, according to Wikipedia, are a few characteristics: They’re tacky, they lack a definitive style and they have a “displeasingly jumbled appearance.”
Well, count 2010 as the year the last nail was hammered into the McCoffin: In its latest report on home-buying trends, real-estate site Trulia declares: “The McMansion Era Is Over.”
Just 9 percent of the people surveyed by Trulia said their ideal home size was over 3,200 square feet. Meanwhile, more than one-third said their ideal size was under 2,000 feet. |

| I like McMansions in Cranbury! They pay more tax and don't add lots of school-age kids. |

Correct on the first point. Not sure what your basing your second point on -- most of the larger hoe owners I know have multiple school-aged kids. In fact, as soon as the last kid graduates they typically sell and another family with school age kids moves in, in a perpetual cycle. |

I just wish it was still an operating farm. Then you would have been able to buy one of the smaller houses in town and your taxes would not be so bad. |

I just wish it was still an operating farm. Then you would have been able to buy one of the smaller houses in town and your taxes would not be so bad. |
The reality is that we love our home but we do have issues. We dont love being so close to our neighbors but we also like our neighbors and in the summer there is a nice community feeling. I truly think that when the trees mature, Liedtke Drive will be a very desirable place to live... by that time, I expect the real estate cycle (which turns every ten years) will put us back where we started when we bought the place. The fact that I can send my kids to school by bicycle and walk to Gil and Bert's for ice cream makes me feel like I live in a real neighborhood... not some far off suburban hideaway that requires me to drive 5 miles to get an iced tea. Taxes are taxes... they stink no matter what. |

I live in a modest house on the other side of town and I am grateful for the taxes paid by the residents of Liedtke Dr. Thank you. |

Keep the McMansions coming to Cranbury. They are great!
BTW, there is one being build on Old Trenton Rd.; it was converted from a 3-bedroom ranch home. |

Why do you people like McMansions so much?
I guess thats its all about the bottom line?
BIGGER HOUSE= MORE TAX FOR THEM= LESS TAX FOR ME
You live your lives based on simple-minded equations?
You don't care that they don't fit in looks-wise?
The tend to built in their own secure, little enclaves with their precious cul-de-sacs (French for dead ends), carved out and seperated from the rest of the community.
What are they......................special???

I'm not against big houses.
I just don't think that you should buy up what used to be someones family farmland to plop down one of these overly-stylized behemoths in mass quantities. They take up useful land in a wasteful manner. People come here and throw some money around and VOILA!...........the developer makes a mint and then run out and do damage somewhere else.
I don't mind a house here and a house there...........just not a dozen or so all plopped down on an old spinach patch.
The suburbs are now the place where they knock down all the trees and then name streets after them!!!!!!!! |

BTW, a new home in Cranbury needs a 6-acre lot. Nomally, people who can afford to buy a 6-acre lot in Cranbury build a McMansion on it. |

Yeah!!! And what's with all these "horseless carraiges" everyone's so fond of? In my day, we had actual horses and carriages, and the only air pollution we had to worry about was the smell of horse-puckey!!! |
