You know who helped to end school prayer?
Christians!!!!!!!!
Right!!!!!!
Not some dippy hippies in tie-dyed shirts smoking weed.
Catholics disagreed with Protestant intrepretations of the King James Bible.
So, before you get up on your high and mighty "christian" horse, school prayer was ended to protect EVERYONE from each other. It's not some grand plot by liberals to wipe out religious whackos.
I think that you folks do love to play up the poor me victim thing. It helps with the cruciFICTION-martyr complex. |
Amen from a Dominican and Jesuit indoctrinated former Catholic
it's all about escape from freedom - as Fromm phrases it |
I've been reading Erich Fromm since you mentioned him, and you're right. I know people who are die-hard Catholics, and I think they like it because it releaves them of personal responsibility.
They are kinda rigid in their thinking about things-like Fromm's automaton's!
They like to look down on non-church people, and they are also quite dull and they lack any creative impulse or imagination.
I refer to them as the dishrags!
They're ALMOST as interesting as dishrags. |

Look at the current US Supreme Court - now I think a majority Catholic - interpreting the constitution like the bible. Don't know what educational institutions they attended, but a good bet would be that much of it wasn't secular |

I don't know why people put so much stock into what the Supreme Court says. I know that their word is law- the majority is anyway. But, you have to understand that they are political appointees for life. It's the world's cushiest job once you get it. Like being the Pope. The all have their own personal experiences, biases, prejudices and opinions. As objective as they may try to be, they are still creatures of the times that they grew up in and the environmental factors which helped to shape their psyches.
Scalia and Alito grew up just down the road from here.
They probably have very similar experiences from growing up in the Italian-American community in Trenton.
Ginsburg has an ethnic background too. She is from NY and spent time at Rutgers. So, at least 3 of the justices have spent some time in NJ.
What I am saying is that it is difficult to seperate one's own personal experiences from one's views on the world. Subjectivity does creep into their judging whether we like to pretend that it doesn't or not. Don't let the majestic flowing robes fool you, they are NOT perfect people. They screw-up and make mistakes too. What may have been a "good" decision 20-30 years ago, may be viewed as archaic today. It's just that whatever the majority of the court says................goes, whether anyone likes it or not is all up for academic discussion.
But, as much as they like to pretend that they are not politically, socially, religiously or even emotionally motivated, we all know better than that.
They are still people, and people do strange things. |

Supporting your extreme, intolerant point of view with the "slippery slope" argument; purposely grossly distorting and misrepresenting your opponents view; insulting, stereo-typing and villifying your perceived opponents;
And you don't see the hypocrisy? You're acting like Palin, Beck and Hannity. |

It depends what you mean by "put stock into." As you say, their majority word is law, barring changes to the Constitution or waiting long enough for a different make-up of the Court to reverse itself. So like them or not, respect them or not, if you're concerned with what is legal you have to put stock into them.
Now if you are referring to whether there is any integrtity to the Court, I don't think most smart people still believe this. They have repeatedly demonstrated that the majority is a political body with more loyalty toward party politics than the Constitution.
So you can not respect them and still accept their word as law at the same time. |

Well, you have to accept what they say, even though it may make no sense or if you disagree with it. A lot of laws make no sense. |

Personally, not my style, but aside from the part about "have mercy on the people here who don't know you", it seemed pretty harmless. The video is a christian benediction. Did someone suggest we should allow this in school? |

So that "performance" seemed perfectly normal to you?
WOW!
Maybe, she should've purged the audience of evildoers by having a witch trial?
You ARE nuts! |

When individuals repeatedly either voluntarily or by force suspend belief in real things - the result is very scary!!
We've been through this before though and have prevailed -- Thank GOD |

There you go again, distorting the facts. I said "harmless" not "normal" or even agreeable; just "harmless". Our opinions of her faith is irrelevant, as long as her behaviour is harmless. |

Responses like this is why it's so hard to have rational discussions with believers. They go right past the craziness - to get into the defensive posture.
I think on some level they know that suspending belief in defense of their ego is pathetic |

Harmless???????????
She was shaking and freaking out like some spasmodic!
They had to call her an ambulance.
She appeared to be ready to speak in tongues at 1:15.
Harmless????????????
To a citizen of kookytown, perhaps.
To which, it seems, you are the mayor!
I'm sure even that Texas audience was freaked out by her behavior.
YOU ARE WEIRD!!!!!!!
Seek help.............. STAT! |

Thats the problem with faith-based people. Facts & reality hold NO sway with them. They get a nutty idea in their heads and it stays there like a tumor. No amount of reason or rationale will convince them of the Truth. |
