I find it hard to believe in this period of low inflation (sub 3%), our tax bill is going up over 6%. Why is the town increasing spending at over twice the rate of inflation?

They didn't increase spending at all. They actually lowered it a little. But your tax bill is a factor to both spending and the total tax base (expense and revenue). Commercial property valuations in Cranbury have declined rapidly, along with home values. Every year commercial properties and some homes successfully appeal for lower assessments which reduces the total assessed tax base for Cranbury by double digits. Therefore if spending remains flat your tax bill will go up. It becomes a question of how much can they cut from spending just to keep pace with the declining tax base.
