are we now partially outsourcing police in Cranbury? I saw a plainsboro pd car responding to what looked like an accident on the corner of main and plainsboro a few days ago.

No, Plainsboro does not cover Cranbury. There may have been a reason for this though. For example, if Plainsboro was coming back from lunch at Wawa and witnessed/ came upon the accident or if they were pursuing the car from Plainsboro. I have seen Cranbury cops have people pulled over just across the border in Plainsboro.

Also, there are times our officers will go to other towns or other towns respond to our calls for help in urgent cases.

there are many times that our police officers are busy with other calls for fire/ems or even traffic stops. So it is not uncommon for the pd to ask for assistance from another pd.

Especially since staffing levels have been reduced. The pd is just getting by.

Auto Theft at Princeton Arms West

Ali Rahin, 21, of Plainsboro, was arrested on Dec. 14 for stealing a vehicle from a Princeton Arms West parking lot.

At 6:28 a.m., Police responded to the apartments for a report of an auto theft, which had just occurred while the vehicle was being run to warm up in the parking lot.

A description was broadcast to neighboring jurisdictions and the vehicle was located by Cranbury Police, who apprehended the suspect after a foot pursuit through the area.

The suspect was charged with theft and left in the custody of Cranbury Police on their charges related to this incident.

In response to guest this is not the incident I was reffering to. My concern is that I do not trust police forces outside of Cranbury especially Plainsboro cops. If we need more police then lets hire more. Outside police should only be needed in a extreme emergency. Also, we seem to have several robberies that are hush hush in this town including the recent robbery in Lenape Court. In response to 8670 I would not believe anything you say with the constant bs you post on this forum.

You want to think Plainsboro is patrolling here. That is not the case. I tried to explain reasons why you may see a Cranbury car in another town or one in ours. The other day I saw an EW car over on old Cranbury rd by the bridge. Doesn't mean their patrolling Cranbury.

How many is millions? I can't think it's all salary. I imagine there are a lot of state mandates as well which cost a lot. Police and public safety I have no issue spending money on. God forbid I need help or there is a major issue I don't want resources to be an issue.

Welcome to the real world "Cranbury". That's the minimum cost to have a police department. No extra patrols. No traffic enforcement. No court. Just the bare minimums to get by with two officers on the road. We don't have a small 1 square mile town.

I checked out the detailed budget links. Fascinating how much more the Township pays in benefits per employee than my public company, not just the police but all positions, at least 30% more. Within the police force, the mean pay is far higher than the mean pay at my company. And there's no pension in mine, or most public companies these days.

The value of that pension is huge. I would have to accumulate several millions dollars in retirement savings over time by taking it out of my paychecks, mostly after taxes, to have the equivalent retirement income as these pensions provide, assuming a typical life span. And don't they continue to get benefits as well? With mine and most private companies we're on our own for benefits in retirement and the costs escalate dramatically.

I also see the Township has a column for an automatic 2% raise. That's nice. My public company doesn't give any cost of living or automatic increases. They adjust pay for promotions or if the result of market surveys show they have fallen at least 10 percent below market average pay for that position. People go several years between any raise on average.

You add it all up, and I don't see that public employees here, and I assume this is typical for the state, are really paid less than private counterparts. In fact, I would argue they may be paid better, certainly that my public companies typical employee. Of course public companies have the potential for far higher pay to the top execs than anywhere in this public system, so I guess in theory everyone in private enterprise can trade worse pay and long term benefits for the few percent chance they will rise to a level that proves far more lucrative than public employee in New Jersey.

Also, why wouldn't the average teacher pay be comparable to the average police pay? As a member of society, I would value teachers importance equally with the police. One protects us, the other is critical to our future. Sure they are different. There is a small percent chance a policeman will have to put his or her life on the line for the job. Though we have volunteer firemen who do as well. On the flip side, teachers have to take out loans and spend on average 5 years getting higher and specialized education. Yet I hear far more complaints about teacher pay and benefits than police. Why hasn't Governor Christie made a huge stink about police pay, unions, benefits, etc.?

To be clear, I am not criticizing the police pay. Just saying teachers shouldn't be less. And saying the facts don't see to bare out the myth that public work is less lucrative, when all comp and benefits are factored in, than private company work.
