Perhaps this is a good location for the stand alone cranbury library?

Excellent location.

On Main Street versus in the school parking lot. This is huge.

Nice public lawn in the front, right between Cranbury Pizza and Gil & Berts which get the most foot traffic in town. We can stop posting signs to tell all the kids to stay off it.

Additional parking in the rear that could instantly be converted to additional public parking without having to buy and build more lots and closer to most places than the one proposed at the old water tower site.

And the facility was designed to handle heavy packages and mail to likely concrete or reinforced floors appropriate for books.

The only think it lacks is their ability to build something brand new purpose-built to their ideal functions and architectural style. But while that's nice, it should be low on the list of must-haves.

The post office is remaining. It's only the distribution that is moving.

All excellent points.

And, yes, only distribution and mail handling is moving to Hightstown, for now. They will be reevaluating in a few months. That leaves only a retail window and the PO boxes. That could be done at a number locations in the Village, though I suspect it will just be closed down utlimately and not relocated anywhere.

The US postal service is closing and selling off thousands of locations nationwide. Once Cranbury's PO is 85% empty, it will probably be added to the list. That only makes sense.

This is a conversation our TC and Library Board should be having with the US Postal Service. lets at least start the conversation. what is there to lose?

This location would be fantastic for a new stand alone library!!

Not sure.

anyone?

The current PO is a big rectangular box. yes, it would need work, but it has a nice facade and inside, its a blank slate.

Plus, lots of parking in the rear.

This is the Todd Beamer memorial. I can't see any politician agreeing to close it. As we saw congress does ultimately control the postal service. Further many offices are just retail.

Look around the country at the real estate the post office has already sold. Many we're buildings dedicated to Heroes but they were sold nonetheless.

That's made no difference for any of the other post offices or dedicated public buildings that have been sold. The government shouldn't permanently subsidize buildings for the sole purpose of maintaining their memorials. But that doesn't mean the Township couldn't decide to carry the memorialization over to the Library if it was there, so it doesn't have to go away. In fact, converting it to a Library could preserve that whereas letting it be sold to a private party could not. The Post Office will inevitably closes this under used location, whether soon or in a few years, and short of the Library or Township buying it, don't be surprised if you see another large new home developed there.

The Library has raised has saved up $600,000 from surpluses and raised $600,000 so they have $1.2 million available so far.

No way to answer the rest until things evolve with the post office site and the feds decide to put it up for sale. Though if they were serious the Township could certainly go through our Congressman and Senators to make it clear they have a public service use for the building should it become available.

OMG
WHY ARE WE LOSING OUR POST OFFICE?
This is insane. I'd much rather have a post office paid for by the USPS and Federal Government then pay for new library. This is insane.

I have heard nothing of substance in any meeting about this happening. Sky is not falling, we are not losing our post office. There would be a much bigger outcry than the stink being made here if it were true.
