Just wondering how safe Cranbury is if the same 3-4 cops are always parked on main street and sitting inside of Teddys restaurant for 1-2 hours everyday. I heard the twp. Commitee is looking to lay off 2 police officers and apparently we don't need them if you can just hang out for hours at a time. My guess is it is not the last 2 hired that are hanging out because they would know that the are on the chopping block. Shouldn't the chief of police be keeping an eye on his men? |

To my fellow residents,
I want to take this opportunity to address the prior post. As the former liaison to the Police Department I fully supported and continue to support our officers presence at local restaurants for their meal breaks along with any other opportunity they can find to interact with the community. Specific to visiting local restaurants so doing achieves the following:
- They are in atmosphere where they can interact with residents and their families. This builds familiarity and comfort so our children are not afraid of the officers when help is needed.
- The officers appreciate Cranbury and our residents/ businesses. They want to and enjoy being members of our community. By being with the residents in a non-emergency situation they can better achieve such goals.
- They remain in town and in a central area to respond to calls. This is better than going to venues outside of town. I have personally seen unfinished meals left when officers rush to respond.
- I have witnessed cars coming to a complete crawl when they see the police cars parked on Main St.
- The officers spend their own money in local businesses which supports the town and our taxes.
I am sure there are advantages I missed. I encourage anyone who sees our officers to go up and introduce yourself.
If anyone does want to discuss this or any other township issue then I am readily available.
Thank you,
Jay Taylor |

You do realize they are there on break. Do you get chained to a desk at work or allowed a lunch break? I don't know any person not allowed a lunch break. |

While on this subject it might be nice during the long term bridge construction to see the officers out of the cars and directing traffic and not sitting in the cars playing with their electronic devices. The traffic patterns are changing daily and there will be some accident if someone is not directing the traffic. It might be good for the Supervisor to oversee the patrol officers. |

Last few times I have gone through there, I've seen them outside directing. Police chief himself was there taking part.
It has been pretty miserable cold lately, probably a smart move for them to stay warm and alert when they can.
Mobile devices used to keep in touch with what is going on in the community, and to help do their work is an asset.
Seems to me they are using good common sense. |

The officers are there using personal and vacation days. Yes, they get paid, but they don't have to take the job. They could opt to be off with family. Considering this is a year long project, I think we're lucky with a small department to have officers willing to give up their personal time for us.
I don't get the need to ignorantly criticize people who help whether Police, fire and first aid on sirens, or the TC members. I doubt anyone criticizing gives up even an hour to volunteer without personal gain. |

I have been coming to Teddy's restaurant for several years, so I thought I'd throw in my two cents regarding the "police at Teddy's matter". I for one, enjoy seeing the police at the restaurant. I welcome the opportunity to bond with them and to share local issues and concerns.
Recently there was a customer, who dealt with a sudden heart issue. Having the police on hand to immediately deal with the matter, I feel, could have contributed to saving the man's life.
The police officers, like everyone else, are entitled to a food break. In fact, I'm glad they choose to patronize Teddy's. It's both comforting and in the spirit of community that their presence is felt.
I can recall on a few occasions, when they sprung into action after receiving a call to duty. And yes, the hot breakfasts they were enjoying remained on the table as they headed out the door.
Next time your at Teddy's Restaurant and the police are there, take a moment to introduce yourself and get to know them. You just may need their services one day. |

I think most of us would prefer more speed traps, not less. |

I think everyone wants more speed traps except maybe our TC. When the town had a traffic bureau (thanks to the mid-90's and early 2000 TC) who focused on safety Cranbury had a no nonsense reputation. I recall being in meetings with clients and saying I came from Cranbury only to be told they got a speeding ticket passing through. That hasn't happened in a while though I do see cars out. It seems our TCs in recent years have been reducing the police force and ignoring the emphasis on pedestrian safety or speeding. I hear some on the TC want to go further with cuts which would mean very few speed traps and Main St., Old Trenton, Cranbury Neck and Plainsboro Rd.being a drag strips.
The cost of police spread out over the town is minimal relative to the benefit we receive in property values from slow streets, safe walking areas, low crime, etc...I look at it like the school. I don't use it, but if not for it being supported my home would be significantly less in value. I don't see this value with the many other boards or events the town supports. |

Your opinion.. Not mine.
You think speed traps make your world safer? Really??
Presence is one thing, speed traps bite.
I alwsys of the more important things police couid be doing.
Last week observed a police car do a "bat turn" on rte 130. Right in front of me. Then took off like a bat out of hell, no lights no siren.
Eventually I caught up to the patrol car that had pulled over and ducked into a parking lot.
Yep.. Setting up a speed trap as my radar went off.
What hypocrites.
And probably 100 things they could be doing in my humble opinion.
East Windsor, not Cranbury though.
I still grit my teeth, flash my lights and warn other vehicles as they approach a speed trap. |

As for Cranbury Pd response time there was an alarm last week that went off during the day at a home and it took the two police cars 17 minutes to respond. Considering the fact that the adjacent home was the recipient of a major burglary last year at a millon + $ loss you would think they could speed it up a bit!---just my 2 cents. |

In all fairness, regarding an alarm activation.. It might not be just the police response delay.
How long did it take the monitored service to respond and attempt to verify before calling the police?
Could have been several minutes added on.
I've noticed ADT at times taking very long times sometimes before calling the house phone to check.
Also might had had another call they were on. |

That is the downside as well when we're a small town. If only 2 officers were on duty one could be over in the warehouse district and the other on a call or both on a call. The police only have 3 officers |

In contrast to this poster, we recently had a smoke alarm go off and we smelled smoke. We called 911. Fortunately, it was only a defective unit, but 2 police officers were there in less then 5 minutes, the fire chief in less then 10! The fire chief also had 2 trucks in front of our house ready to go. This was at 2 in the morning!! So, I am pretty darn happy with the response times!! |
