I saw in the Cranbury press about unlicensed pets this morning. I'm glad to see the people were issused a summons to appear in court. Residents should always be protective of their pets and buying a license just insures that you have a current rabies vaccination plus if my dog gets out of my invisibl fence it has a better chance of being retuned to me since the license has a number on it.My dog is out in the yard at times alone and there is always the possiblity that a rabid animal could wander in my yard and I wouldn't even know it, then my dog comes in and plays with my children and the next thing I would know is that they have rabies also. People should just do the right and protect their pets and at least protect their families fromvthis horrible disease. Thank you very much to all involved I applaud you .

I have always had all of my animals have their rabies shots even if I did not license them. I do understand to license dogs, but the township wants us to license cats?? I know my cats NEVER go out - but the do have their rabies shots.

What if by chance your cat does get out and doesn't have a license and bites someone? It would have to be decapitated and sent out for rabies testing. You would feel pretty horrible that you know it has a rabies shot but the person euthanizing it doesn't and your pet died for no reason!!

Unlike dogs, cats are shy and will try to run away from strangers. When was the last time you read about someone got bitten by a house cat?

From what I understand this is almost all dog if not all dog related. It was based on the census conducted. A dog will bark if someone knocks and no one is home, but no one knows a cat is in the house unless it's in the window.

I do agree with licensing dogs. With cats if someone gets bit, then how do you prove whose cat bit you? There are so many feral cats in town and unlike dogs you don't put collars with tags on cats. We fortunately don't have packs of wild dogs on the street.

This is the closest Cranbury has ever come to a "non First World problem". I imagine that people in 3rd world countries have to worry about packs of wild dogs, right?

They added cat licensing rules and it made no sense. There have been no issues of domestic cats giving people rabies and the feral stray cats aren't going to be licenses anyway. It was a silly, unnecessary rule. Licensing my dog makes sense. Licensing a house cat that hasn't been outside for a decade and doesn't even want to, makes none.

According to the latest data by the CDC in 2010 there were 303 confirmd domestic cat cases of rabies compared to 69 cases for dogs( granted it doesn't say house cat or feral cat) but cats are #1 on the domestic animal list. Remember when you do get there first shot they aren't immunized till about 28 days later. Just a little info for you.

This is counter intuitive and old data.

More importantly, one data point does not say anything at all; does it imply that all of the years except 2010 that there were more dog cases of rabies?

Why didn't you post a link to your source?

Methodology? I am skeptical that the data refers to house-only cats as opposed to pets that are allowed outside.

The data would make sense for pet cats allowed outside because they typically are less supervised than pet dogs and allowed to roam freely. But that's totally different than house cats.

An indoor only cat is not in danger of being exposed to rabies. So why force registration and charge a fee for house cats? Is this really an essential use of government?

The above is not true. We have an indoor only cat. We also get him vaccinated. A few years ago he walked up to us and brought a dead bat with him. Our vet said we were very lucky we did the vaccine as bats are known to be heavy carriers of rabies.

I am opposed to licensing, but very much in favor of the vaccine. If not for it our cat would have been killed to ensure the kids were all safe.

Your anecdotal example does not invalidate questioning whether the cited but undocumented statistic was based on house cats versus pets with access to the outside.

As you say, you oppose mandatory licensing which is what this is about. Licensing of indoor-only cats is something that should only be done if there is a substantial public health risk. I have still seen nothing to demonstrate there is. We vaccinate our pets too, but I don't see why the government needs money from me to license a cat never is outside.

Ok, so even if I did get my cat licensed, they do not wear collars so how would anyone know if it were licensed?? And I am not about to start letting them wear collars just for that face. Some people in this town are a little crazy!

Google is your friend: http://www.cdc.gov/rabies/location/usa/surveillance/domestic_animals.html

Quote:
The number of rabies cases reported in cats is routinely 3-4 times that of rabies reported in cattle or dogs.

I was only responding to your comment that an indoor cat is not exposed to rabies.

I see two different issues.

1) I fully see a need for a vaccination.

2) I do not see a need for licensing cats.

I don't see what a license does. If a cat outside bites me I have very little chance of tracking the cat down by going to town hall. In fact, it would be hard to track down the cat in any way aside from going home to home.

A dog has a collar and if it's loose without a collar you can still fairly easily find the owner. As I have yet to see a stray dog in town. We do have many feral cats.

I don't see what licensing proves. I do see what vaccinating the cat proves.
