Mr Johnson suggested having teachers at the public school ask children to tell on their parents if they have unlicensed pets? Wow! Feels a little like 1984!

The suggestion by Mr. Johnson to have children turn in their parents for not having a cat or dog licence is very, very wrong. This type of Orwellian behavior by an ex mayor and present committee member absolutely sickens me. The next thing you know he will be paying rewards to folks to turn in their neighbors for HPAC violations!!! My we have stooped soooo very low. Mayberry and Norman Rockwell are rolling in their graves!!!SO Sad, so very Sad----

Comments like this are typical Cranbury republican teaparty politics - let's talk about new business on main street

I am not teaparty by any means. However, having kids talk about dogs or cats at home for this purpose is concerning. I don't mind getting a form home saying parents please complete this for dog or cat licensing. I would be troubled if the school was asking my kids for this purpose. I want my kids and I to trust our educators, police, fire, ems, etc...

Enough with Main St already as well. People have a right to retire. New business will come in. No storefront has ever remained vacant for long.

Why would you have to be in the tea party to find Mr. Johnson's suggestion disturbing? I don't want our schools to put our kids in this position. It's an offensive suggestion, particularly from someone who is doing so as representative of our township.

The tea party comment is a silly one and rivals the comment itself. If this idea was in fact made- and made seriously- I would be very disappointed. I take things said on this board with several grains of salt. I hope no serious proposal was made to have kids serve as agents of enforcement. I chuckle even thinking of a teacher pulling a first grader's drawing if fluffy or fido is portrayed. Your honor, may I present Exhibit A....

From the meeting minutes...

Quote:

Pet Census – Mr. Johnson suggested in future censes that schoolteachers ask the students who owns pets. Some board members did not like the suggestion. Several board members noted they have friends in town who have said they won’t license their pets. The board will continue to identify ways to enforce compliance with dog licensing.

If it is true that board members have friends that aren't going to license their pets then shouldn't they give the names to the police so that they can verify and issue summonses or do the board members just want to make rules and put the burden on someone else to just do the real work? Better yet shouldn't they be required and authorized to summons those people themselves.???

Why is this tiny town OBSESSED with pet licensing? This shouldn't even rise to the level of discussion, especially the silly cat licensing.

Purchasing a license proves you have a current rabies vaccine and it also guarantees your pets safe return to you if it happens to be found by someone. If your pet has no license and bites someone and the owner can't be located then you pet will be euthanized and Decapatated then sent out for rabies testing. Your either cheap or don't love your pet like you say you do!!!

So the point of cat licensing is to protect cats and people in the event your cat escapes your house, gets rabies and attacks someone?

Ok. The fact is, we can make a case to protect against a lot of potential risks. It is important to recognize the likelihood of the risks we are protecting against and the consequences of taking action vs inaction. What do the numbers say?

How likely is this to happen in Cranbury?

If this scenario were to play out, how would licensing change the outcome?

Cranbury has had a number of rabies cases. I don't support licensing cats because.

1) cats don't have or should not have collars.
2) if a cat without a collar gets out and bites someone it will be hard to capture the cat and if it is chances are there is a limited time before it's put down.

That said you should get even house cats vaccinated. Cats get out every so often and you want to be sure if the cat gets out then you and the cat are safe. Also, we have a lot of bats in town and we had one in our house. Bats are known carriers and you want to be sure the cat is safe.

So yes, i believe an ounce of protection is worth it just like homeowners or car insurance. But i think licensing is not important.

The TC now and when the law was adopted is opposed. I was at the meeting when it was first passed. However, the board of health does not report to the TC and the TC has to approve BOH ordinances.

Thank you. It sounds like you support rabies shots for cats as a precautionary measure on a voluntary basis, but that in general, there is a low probability of a Cranbury house cat getting rabies, and if does, it will probably be put down, licensed or not.

I assume this is a joke post because if someone really believes you can't love your domestic house cat without registering them with the city they truly need some psychological help.
