Committee passes no passing zone

CRANBURY — The Township Committee introduced an ordinance Jan. 14 that would extend the no-passing zone on Cranbury Neck Road from Symmes Court to Wynnewood Drive.
The current no-passing zone begins at the road’s T-intersection with South Main Street and on extends to Symmes Court.
Mayor David Stout said the ordinance is in response to safety concerns that school and township officials had about the area.
Residents in the area also have said they are worried about the safety of the road, particularly when their children are walking to school.
”It’s common sense to have a no-passing zone in a 25-mph zone,” Mayor Stout said.
Cranbury Neck Road is a 25-mph zone from South Main Street to Wynnewood Drive, where the speed limit becomes 50 mph.
The committee’s recommendation to extend the no-passing zone was approved by the state Department of Transportation and Middlesex County. The county requested that the committee pass an ordinance so it could begin restriping the area, Mayor Stout said.
Although Andrew Feranda, a professional engineer and traffic consultant to Cranbury, did not work on this particular project he did agree with the committee’s decision to extend the no-passing zone.
”You don’t want vehicles pulling out into oncoming lanes in a residential neighborhood,” Mr. Feranda said.
