Question:

Why the English author/journalist James (Jan) Morris lived at 38 South Main Street in 1956?

He was the journalist who was on the successful climb of Mt Everest in 1953 and reported the ascent back to England on the day of the Queen's Coronation.

Interesting as a current Cranbury resident has told me that she played in the back yard at 38 South Main St as a child when James Morris was living there. I've always understood that James did live there for a period in 1956. Does the writer know where James lived if not at 38 South Main St? Perhaps he rented 38 from the Taylors?

Taylor’s had 6 kids. They never rented. The address has to be off.

My research now tells me that James Morris lived at 25 South Main St, Cranbury, for a few months in 1954 before he became a woman - Jan - in 1972. This house is opposite the First Presbyterian Church.

There's a good review of a book about James/Jan in today's NY Times Book Review - May 16.
