Good to hear that.

There is no need to feel dumb for slowing down and making a safe right turn. It is given that the car behind you should keep a safe distance and slow down as well. This is safe driving not impeding traffic. Further, the car right behind you may not be in a hurry and may not feel impeded.

Concerning speeding tickets -- Cranbury police used to police Main street and Plainsboro road ruthlessly (maybe 10-14 years ago?)

Maybe you should sit on Plainsboro Rd some day and watch the white charger speed up and down this road for hours. They still ruthlessly patrol this road, but it doesn't matter because as soon as they leave everyone's speeding again.

From where I stand there are two issues one being the law and the other being what should be done.

In terms of the law using the shoulder as people are stating is illegal and whether a person feels it appropriate or not the police have the right and law on their side to ticket. If I get a ticket for doing 70 on the turnpike I deserve it as I'm going over the speed limit regardless of traffic flow or other issues. Same rule applies here.

Now, on the subject of a right turn lane I do agree that this is a good idea. The state has to do this, but it is a good idea.

Until then either obey the law or take the chance on a ticket. No sense complaining about the ticket itself. There is sense in complaining and proposing a right turn lane to the state.

I don't think anyone has been complaining about the ticket, or saying it is technically illegitmate. I think the comments have been to disagree that the police should spending there limited resources and time on policing that. If they had the time to be ticketing people for every law on the books, fine. Or if they just happened to be driving by and saw this, fine. But the original poster suggested they were staking out this location to specifically give people tickets for this. So our collective complaint is that this is a poor prioritization on their part because there are many higher priority offenses they should be focusing on. There are all sorts of laws on the boooks that don't usually get enforced. In fact, more don't than do. So the bottom line is they had to make a conscious decision to enforce this one. And barring information not yet presented here, I agree that is a poor decision.

Well stated in previous post.
It's the prioritization of what the police are doing. This is no better than a "speed trap" I encountered in the south, where the speed limit dropped from 50 to 25, but the speed limit sign was hidden by trees. The police hide in a grove of trees waiting for victims.

And, just because a law exists doesn't means it makes any sense:
http://www.dumblaws.com/laws/united-states/new-jersey

There is actually a law in the town I grew up in stating that all residents must have a musket mounted over their fireplace.

My sister-in-law was recently ticketed in a similar situation in South Brunswick. If you're driving South on Route 1 in South Brunswick and attempt to make a right turn onto Finnegan's Lane beware that the same road markings exist. And yes, the SBPD were waiting that day to "ambush" those who crossed over the solid line....just another typical ticket quota day for NJ's bravest.

My wife once got pulled over in North Brunswick near the intersection of RT-1 and RT-130 for failing to stay on the right lane of RT-130, which has two traveling lanes going north.

She was connecting to RT-1 north, so she had to stay on the left-hand lane! There was a traffic sign there saying to "Turnpike keep left."

The cop gave her the ticket anyway.

The prosecutor was asking for paying surcharges to replace the ticket with a zero point one. We decided to go for a trial.

It took both of us (I accompanied her to the court) three visits to the court to get the ticket dismissed (cop did not show up!).

Recently, a friend told me of this website and I can't believe it exists. You people obviously have way too much time on you hands to spend your days commenting on whether the police should be enforcing the traffic laws regarding improper use of the shoulder on Route 130 and Old Trenton Rd. . First, it is a grant from the State for action against aggressive driving, and not your local tax dollars which are funding most of that action. Secondly, yes it is illegal to drive on the shoulder and it does create a hazard for people who actually obey the motor vehicle laws and properly turn from the driving lane. Third, this is a State highway and you should talk to the State about a right turn lane, which is probably needed there. Do you think the police just go out there and paint lines on the street wherever they desire? Lastly, why would you think that you get to choose which laws are enforced and which are not. Run for State office if you want to write the laws but until that time, and last time I checked, the police have an obligation to enforce all of the laws.
If you have so much excess time in your day and wish to fill the void, why not do something constructive like attemping change the problems you see with action instead of complaining here and everywhere or volunteering your excess time and actually helping people in some way. I'm sure the school or the library could use volunteers like you who have so much time to give. I bet the police department could find a use for volunteers also. Try it!
Please, no need to respond as I don't have time to continue this nonsense. It would a better use of your time to be part of a solution to whatever problems you see, not a lazy anonymous on- line complainer.

I don't see this forum as complaints. I see it as everyones chance to be heard. It's called free speach!

Funny, but that long diatribe seemed a lot like a complaint.

Drivers who got ticked for driving on the shoulder to make the right turn are likely to complain, which is a form of free speech, right?

BTW, can't wait to play Grand Theft Auto IV. Very Happy

I didn't get a ticket or get stopped, but I complained anyway.

It seems like if you don't like the POV it is a "complaint" and if you agree with it, it is "free speech."

For me it is not about what they did up until now, it is about the fact that what they are doing is bad public policy and should be called out.

I don't see how ticketing people who are making illegal turns is bad policy. BTW an officer was behind me today. The light was green and I pulled into the shoulder to make the right. I did not get stopped. Now, if it was a red light and I used the shoulder perhaps I would have been ticketed.

I assume your car was not passing any cars on green, so it's ok that you cut into the shoulder *briefly*.

Don't use shoulder to pass cars waiting in front for red, especially when there is a cop around!! When there is no cop around, you might get lucky if you do that to save a minute or two!

That's correct, the light was green, there was no car in front so I pulled into the shoulder and made ther turn at the light, maybe 10-15 feet. I believe the concern is that the drivers who pass on the right at red.
