| I think I have septic drainage problems. The grass above the drain field grows very well and I can see small puddles of water there. I don't have water back up to house problem yet. Any idea how to get it fixed? |

| If it has not been pumped out in 2 or more years - your septic might be filled or clogged. You need to call someone in immediately to prevent any damage. I've used John Holm & sons from monroe - 609-448-6026. |

Thanks for the info. I just called John Holm & sons to schedule a pumping service next week. I have not had a pumping for 7 years now! Hope that it's not too late to save my septic system. |

The problem may be bigger than that. If it's not draining to the field that could be bad. |

You are right. 
I need to replace my drain field. Has anyone used Wham Engineering Services (114 Windsor Road) for this kind of job before? |

| Wham reviewed my oil tank work and also did an abandonment for my neighbors tank. I am extremly cost concious and picky. Wham Engineering did a detailed job. I know for my neighbors he was the only firm who on the initial estimate phase took samples and discussed the issue. I imagine he's as detailed with the septic. |

How does one "look into sewers"? Wouldn't they have to have been installed to the street first? |

Just to clarify: there is no sewer line in my neighborhood.
In fact, having no sewer line can prevent builders from building small-lot homes. Their is strict regulation about the size of a drain field for environmental concerns.
Hmm... This lack of sewer line may help Cranbury discourage builders who try to build COAH-kind of homes. |

| Our soil in this area varies. I live on Main St. and my back yard is solid clay. I know Shadow Oaks has had a lot of septic issues. Septic has to be carefully maintained, pumped and watched what is disposed of. In a prior life our neighbors put in a garbage disposal and then their septic failed. You can't have septics and garbage disposals. As a former septic owner, I only do sewer now. |

| Why do people keep impliying one has a choice between septic and sewer? For most people isn't it one or the other? I have septic, for example, and no one has ever suggested there is any option to switch to sewer. How would that be possible since the nearest sewer system in the street is I believe at least a mile away? |

It's about 24 years old. I am in Shadow Oaks. I heard that the drain (leach) field was not big enough when the builder built the houses there. Besides the septic issue, everything is good. |

I am not saying people should hook up to sewer. That was not my post at all. What I was saying I only do sewer. Which means that when I moved I looked for homes with a sewer as opposed to a septic.
Homes in Shadow Oaks cannot hook up to sewers. There was an opportunity years ago, but many people voted no. I lived in Shadow Oaks then and wanted the sewer. Funny thing is that I know a couple of people who were very much opposed and then afterward regretted it because their septics failed. |

My field is ~55 years old, never had a problem with it. Had to get a new tank (1000gal) ~6years ago. Old tank was literally falling apart (250gal). Cost me ~2K for the new tank.
Septic/Sewer....if you have the option, and if it is right in front of your house, hook up to sewer. A new field may cost you 20k.....hooking up to sewer may be the same, maybe more, maybe less. |

Did you pump it say once per 3 years? Tips for maintaining a trouble free drain field?
The failure of the drain field is probably my fault, not pumping the tank for almost 7 years. |
