Hamilton tree goes to Rockefeller Center

HAMILTON -- The township's most talked about Norway spruce will soon be Rockefeller-bound.

Mayor John Bencivengo chopped through the forest of rumors surrounding the famous pine tree last night with an announcement that the tree will be cut down Thursday morning.

The evergreen has been selected by Rockefeller Center to be the centerpiece of its famous Christmas celebration in New York City, Bencivengo said.

"This is special day for Hamilton Township and something that our entire community can take great pride in. When Rockefeller Center lights up this holiday season, our entire nation will get a glimpse of a small product of Hamilton Township, and I think that's a great experience for all of us as Hamiltonians to share in," Bencivengo said.

As of last night, the pine was located on the Tree King Nursery lot near the intersection of Klockner and Whitehorse-Mercerville Roads, but the tree is scheduled to arrive in Manhattan on Friday.

"I would also like to congratulate Tree King, a long-time community business, on the selection of one of their trees. For them, that is a true honor and a credit to their years of quality service to community residents," Bencivengo said.

Why do people think that this is so great?
This tree is growing for decades trying to mind it's own business................then..................WHAM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It gets cut down just to stand in the middle of NY so tourists can gawk at it! Then it gets tossed out, and is forgotten until next year. I don't get it. You can call me a treehugger if it makes you feel better, but, doesn't a tree like this serve a better purpose by staying where it is and giving people joy for years to come? Put some lights and tinsel on it if you want to. But, once you cut it down, it ain't going back on it's stump! It just seems like a waste of a nice thing just so Rockefeller can be a bigshot for a few weeks. I know, they don't own the place anymore, but, I'm sure the old man knew about it when they starting doing this in the 1930s. I always get a kick out of those who call themselves environmentalists and "stewards of the land", and then they do kooky things like this to appease the Gods of commerce.

The tree is used for many good things after it comes down. I am proud to know it came from a nearby town. It is used for many positive things according to this website I located. here is a paragraph from the website.

"The decorated tree remains lighted at Rockefeller Center until the week after New Year's Day, when it is removed and recycled for a variety of uses. In 2007, the tree went "green," employing LED lights[5]. After being taken down, the tree was used to furnish lumber for Habitat for Humanity house construction."

Why not use a fake tree? Who would know the diff, and why would they care?
