Grow up Publius. No one is suggesting that we close down the library. The issue is the library has historically needed $350k-$400k to run efficiently and they have been getting more than $600k in funding since the re-assessment. Meanwhile, other municipal departments are cutting back. |

You need to read further beyond the first line of Publius' post. I think you missed his whole point. |

To the last poster...how do you actually know how much the library has needed to operate? Or the township?? You all seem to speak authoritatively. Do you have access to information we don't? |

Actually this information is available to all cranbury taxpayers. Approx. 90K per year has been unused by the library in the last few years. Not sure what their budget looks like this year. Since, they will finally be paying the cranbury school rent of around 50K per year (they had not paid rent at all in the past); perhaps they will have an additional 40K in savings (don't know the exact amount until the township final budget is available). |

Actually 90k is what the school library spends. We have two libraries exisiting the same space, serving two different functions, two separate missions...the public library has a completely different staff and budget. The school library does not pay rent; the public library will pay rent. |

Isn't the school library funded under the school budget? So, any of the mandated library funding from Cranbury taxpayers goes to the Cranbury Public Library. Isn't that why the school library does not pay rent due to being part of the school? |

Yes, the school library is funded through the school budget. In the past since it was a shared area, the public library did not pay rent.
The public library is now paying rent. I aso understand that with this rent the school budget is still going to increase substantially. They received 360K for roof repairs last year. This money is now accounted for other things and the school still wants more. We should have a decrease this year, but the roof money from last year is now looked at a bonus. So the school will have almost 500K in revenue for expenses not incurred (library rent and roof repair that does not have to be repeated). Yet, we're going to face a 5% plus rate increase for more spending. That is where the concern is. Not Municipal, not Public Library, it is the school. |

If this is true; Doesn't it have to voted on by the Cranbury taxpayers for increase in their budget? |

Yes, but when was the last time a budget failed to pass. In Cranbury, people simply vote yes. |

I agree, historically. But this is a small town -- we need to start hear and use the network effect. Everyone reading this needs to communicate to their friends and neighbors about their concerns and urge them not to blindly support it. They need to realize there is a direct relationship between their vote and their taxes -- they can't vote yes and later complain about their tax increase.
It is also very important to understand that voting no does not "screw the school." That is probably most people's concern -- many of us are here because of the school and our core attitude is to do nothing to upset the quality of education and safety, etc, of the school. And the school may very well try to claim it would but this is posturing. If we voted no they simply would have to go back and try harder, but they would figure it out, they would eventually cut the discretionary stuff and our kids education would not be affected... |

Is this even legal to do by the school, can the school realloc the 360K ROOF project money to somethingelse? It seems like a loop hole to me, since the school can use an emergency situation like that next time, then use it somewhere else. Who on the TC know's the legalities of this, and who at the school is responsible for this? |

It's legal. The roof was a line item and not a bond nor was it a separate voter expense. As a line item the expenses can be allocated however they want. The TC has no say only the voters. |

then this was a bait-n-switch by the school to get a bigger budget by making an emergency roof problem that really didnt exist. I still think this is not ethical. |

Agreed. I voted for it last year and have three kids in the school but I am voting "NO" this time if when it coems it really asks for more and does not show a reduction. They need to roll-up their sleeves and prove they care about the state of the economy. I think they are taking advantage of the fact that so many voters are afraid any NO automatically hurts their kids. That's just not the case. if we vote no, they have to figure out realistic cuts and it sends a message that they can't just put forth any budget and expect a rubber stamp. |

Does anyone have the details on when the school budget is published and if there is any school board meeting where the public is allowed to comment and ask questions prior to the township vote? |
